Ken Levine Says BioShock Movie "Still an Active Thing"

BioShock

Despite being placed on hold due to budget concerns, producer Gore Verbinski is still trying to get the BioShock movie made. Ken Levine, the mastermind behind the BioShock series, has also chimed in to say that the project is still being discussed, but he can't make any promises yet.

"I will say that it's still an active thing," Levine said in an interview with Washington D.C. sports station 106.7 (via Kotaku). "And it is something we are still actively talking about and actively working on. I can't tell you whether -- you know, the movie business is complicated -- I can't tell you whether it's going to happen for sure or it's not going to happen for sure. But it's something we are actively discussing, quite actively, and actively working on." So we know, if nothing else, the project is active.

Levine also commented on how the main protagonist will need more of an identity than the anonymous one of the game. "You can't really do that in a movie," he said. "That's your guy, that's the guy you are following through." He says it's important that in the movie, the character is "actually a person who is going through some sort of progression through his life."

Microsoft to Raise Xbox Live Subscription Fees in November

Starting November 1, Xbox Live Gold subscriptions are set to increase in price more than 20 percent across the board. Microsoft made the controversial announcement on Major Nelson's blog this morning.

"Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same," reads Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb's statement. "We're confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry."

Xbox 360 users in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and the U.K. will all be affected by the change in subscription fees. Annual rates in the U.S. are increasing from $49.99 to $59.99, with single-month and three-month subscriptions rising to $9.99 and $24.99, respectively. Pricing for other regions is available on Hryb's blog post.

Stop Being Rude and Put Away Your Phone

Remember the good ol’ days, circa mid-naughts, when most people’s phones just alerted them of incoming calls and the occasional text message?

After a two-second peek, you knew that you were not in desperate demand, and you were free to slip your cell back into your pocket or purse (or cellphone holster, if you were a huge geek). You’d then go back to standing in line, taking in a raucous concert or attending your grandma Bunny’s funeral.

Now we’re more stupidly available, and a phone check involves, at minimum, viewing your e-mails, scanning Twitter mentions, perusing blog comments and stalking that dude’s Facebook wall.

Even if there’s nothing remarkable in any digi-venue, we keep tapping away — reading the latest headlines, checking the weather (often, bafflingly, while outside or near a window) or ordering the most darling collectible Hummel set from eBay. You know, the usual.

Last year, a study even hinted that fresh bits of info may hook into the brain’s reward system, shedding light on how whipping out your phone is analogous to that whiskey-and-taco bender you went on last weekend. (It just hurts so gooooood.)

The problem, of course, is that constantly perusing your phone is freaking rude — a clear signal that your reception is more important than anything going on in the here and now.

Get this: 10% of people 24 and younger think it’s OK to text during sex, according to consumer electronics shopping and review site Retrevo. That brings a whole meaning to the term multitasking.

But unless you’re among that ADD-addled 10%, there’s hope for you yet. May we suggest holsterin’ the old communication cannon during the following situations…

And so begins my Netiquette column — which I write with my Stuff Hipsters Hate co-blogger, Andrea Bartz — this week over at CNN.

This looks interesting! The Samsung Galaxy Tab

Chinese website ifanr has been kind enough to snap several non-blurry candids of the 7-inch Samsung tablet known as the Galaxy Tab. The device is pictured running Android 2.2, although no build number was listed, and other specs reported by the website include: 1024 x 600 AMOLED display (they didn’t say “Super AMOLED,” but we’re assuming it will be), PowerVR SGX 540 graphics processor, 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera, front-facing VGA camera, 3G (no bands listed), GPS, and Wi-Fi b/g/n. The device also appears to use some sort of 30-pin proprietary connector (similar to the Dell Streak and Apple iDevices). What do you think of the GalTab? More images after the break.

Apple Files for Patent to Disable Jailbroken iPhones

Apple has applied for a patent covering various methods for identifying and disabling unauthorized use — including jailbreaking and other hacks — of electronic devices, such as its popular iPhone and iPad products.

Although the U.S. government has legally authorized the jailbreaking (i.e. running code that gives users access to extensions and themes that Apple has not approved, as well as use carriers that are not supported by Apple) of iPhones and other electronic devices for “educational purposes,” it seems that Apple is determined to gain further control over said devices.

Currently, the Cupertino, California-based tech company automatically revokes its warranty on all iPhones that have been subject to jailbreaking and other hacks.

The patent, which was filed in February and published on Thursday, primarily focuses on measures for identifying stolen devices and protecting the kinds of sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and passwords, stored on those devices. Upon learning that a customer’s iPhone has been stolen, for instance, sensitive data stored on that customer’s device could be sent to one of Apple’s remote storage servers and then erased entirely from the phone.

However, the patent also covers methods for identifying devices that have been hacked, jailbroken, unlocked or had their SIM cards removed, such as monitoring sudden increases in memory usage that could “indicate that a hacking program is being run and that an unauthorized user may be using the electronic device.” Theoretically, Apple could then wipe personal data from these devices and then alert AT&T to “shutdown any telephone service to the electronic device, shutdown the electronic device itself, or otherwise suitably extract the functions of the electronic device.”

In other words, the system described in the patent allow Apple to effectively kill jailbroken devices under the guise of protecting customers from theft, since it may not be able to determine whether a device has been stolen or if it is being willingly jailbroken by users.

Dead Nation: New Zombie Survival Guide Trailer

With zombies coming at you from every angle in Dead Nation, you’ll need to know the basics of surviving the zombie apocalypse! Watch the Zombie Survival Guide below:

Dead Nation offers up a variety of weapons to tackle the different zombie types that are after your brains. The combination of the Rifle’s power and accuracy is effective for taking out the big zombies coming at you from a distance. Use your Shotgun when entering tight alleyways and crossing bridges to ensure you stop anything coming at you. Surrounded by a horde of zombies? Whip out that SMG and spray those bullets all directions. And of course there’s my personal favorite: light ‘em up with the flamethrower and watch as a single burning zombie turns into a walking forest fire!

PlayStation Network: Top Gun

Now don’t forget to use the environment and your secondary weapons as distractions. You can fire at vending machines and watch the zombies run towards the spitting cans dispensing from the machine making themselves easy targets for you and your SMG. Now imagine laying a mine down in front of that machine before setting it off: Zombies will rush right up to it and then BOOM!

PSN: Dead Nation - Gameplay

There will be droves of zombies coming after you in Dead Nation. Use the strategies mentioned above in your arsenal but remember: How you take out the zombie apocalypse in your quest for the cure is up to you. Stay alive and happy hunting!

Plants vs. Zombies Adds Steam Achievements, Drops Michael Jackson Zombie

A new round of content is on the way for Plants vs. Zombies, the tower defense game that pits a pack of angry fauna against the living dead.

Touted as the "Game of the Year" edition, the Steam version of Plants vs. Zombies now features Steam Achievements and cloud support. The latter allows players to load up their saved game anywhere.

There's also a "Zombatar" tool, which makes it possible to design a custom Zombie. It's similar to a flash-based tool found on PopCap's official site.

Hands-on: Dead Nation for PS3

I’m a pathological fan of zombie movies. Night of the Living Dead. Return of the Living Dead. 28 Days Later, [REC], Dawn of the Dead — I count these films among my all-time favorites.

So I was obviously itching to get my mitts on Dead Nation, the upcoming PSN shooter from the creators of Super Stardust HD. Luckily, I got some extensive play time from last week’s NYC PlayStation media day. Here’s what I learned.

Dead Nation for PS3 (PSN) Dead Nation for PS3 (PSN)

You can upgrade your guns…a lot. Dead Nation’s environments are dotted with fenced-in “safe zones” that give you a chance to catch your breath and buy supplies from a nearby gun shop. In addition to buying health and ammo, you can purchase mods that will enhance your various weapons in different ways, depending on the gun. The mods upgrade stats such as damage, ammo capacity, firing rate, reload time, and range. While the most potent weapon upgrades are expensive, you can pop open car trunks and chests found through the environments in order to collect cash and other useful items.

The Shotgun is devastating. The Dead Nation build I played featured three weapons — the Shotgun, SMG, and Rifle — with more to come in the final version. Early on, I decided to pour my money into repeatedly upgrading the Shotgun’s damage and spread capability. The results were impressive: My buckshot blasts became massive cones of death, ripping through the ghoul hordes like a wet sneeze through a store-brand tissue. Sometimes I swapped to the SMG for its rapid firing rate, or the Rifle for its long-range capabilities. But come Dead Nation’s release date later this fall, I know what my go-to gun will be.

Dead Nation for PS3 (PSN)

There are many zombie types. After you shake off the initial shock of battling dozens and dozens of zombies, you’ll quickly learn that not every zombie is created equal. You’ll see fast, gangly zombies that rush up close but fall quickly to melee attacks. You’ll see big, tough zombies that take a licking but move more slowly. I even spotted a few zombie cops that wildly fired their service revolvers while they lunged at me.

Mobility = life. Housemarque’s previous game, twinstick PSN shooter Super Stardust HD, is clearly an influence on Dead Nation’s fast-paced gameplay. For example, rapid kills fill up your combo meter, which in turn sends your score into the stratosphere. As in Super Stardust HD, you’ll also realize the importance of staying mobile to avoid incoming enemies — to get cornered is to die. Luckily, you can throw mines and grenades to clear some temporary space, or use the “rush” move to push your way through a line of hungry flesh eaters.

Dead Nation will be released on PSN later this fall. Have any questions about its core gameplay, or zombies in general? Ask away in the comments!

It's panda time

Something I snapped up while in between playing mw2 with my hunny. The mission: get jona to 70 by the weekend. ALMOST THERE. Love spending the weekends over at his place! While we were at barnes and noble yesterday a woman asked about his shoes. So jona tells her that he custom makes them. Hopefully her son calls up my hunny for some shoes! So happy for him!

In other news, the jailbreak is out! So go update your iPhones or if you already did it go ahead and jailbreak! I on the other will stay on 3.13 ;)
